Invite students with a username or QR code

If your students don't have Microsoft or Google accounts or you are having trouble logging in, Flip makes safe and secure sign-in easy with usernames. When you create a username, a unique QR code is also created for the student to scan on the Flip app for mobile devices and tablets.

Important: Once you start a group using the username join method, you cannot change to a different join method for that particular group. You also cannot change your group to a username group if you already have students who joined through another method.

How to set up usernames

You’re only able to add usernames on Flip for web. This includes when you create a group for the first time.

Usernames can include your name, initials, or any easy-to-remember combination, and there's no limit to the number of usernames you can make for each group.

Important: To upload a spreadsheet (up to 250 names at a time), the file format must be ".CSV" (also known as "Comma delimited"). Other file formats won't work. Download our spreadsheet template.

To set up your group with usernames:

  1. Go to and log in.
    • To create a new group: At the left, click +Group Group__empty_.png Create a group
    • To add students to an existing group: At the left, in your groups home, select a group.
      • At the bottom right of the group's cover image, click Share.png Share.
  2. In the "Share group" box, click By usernames.
    • To add more usernames after you set up the group: click Manage usernames.
  3. In the "Restrict group to username access" message, click Continue.
    • This message only shows up when you first set up a group for usernames.
  4. Add your students' usernames.
    • One by one: In the text boxes, enter the corresponding information. Then, click Add__Plus_in_circle_.png.
    • Upload a list: Below the text box, click Upload a CSV. Then, select the file you want to upload.
  5. After you add all your students, at the bottom, click Save.
How to format the CSV file

The spreadsheet should include 3 columns, with the first row of headings: “first_name,” “last_name,”and “id.” Here’s an example of how to format the spreadsheet:

first_name last_name id
John Smith JohnSmith20
Joan Harris JoanH10

How to share with students

After you create the group, you can share the group’s Join code or your unique QR code to invite students to the group. Students will be asked to enter their username to verify their identity, and only students with a username added in the group settings will be allowed to join.

Important: You aren't able to access the unique group QR code until after the group is created.

  1. Go to and log in.
  2. At the bottom right of the group's cover image, click Share.png Share.
  3. At the top right of the "Share group" box, click the QR code icon QR_code.png.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions depending on how you want to share the QR code.
    • To print the QR code: Click Download. Then, open the image file and print it.
