Choose how members can join your groups

Leads can create groups and topics to invite members, peers, families, and communities to participate in Flip. You can manage who is able to join your groups and post videos.

Tip: Learn more about how to share your groups after you create them.

Step 1: Choose if members should use an email to join a group

Choose whether you'd like your members to join a group by having to sign in with an email or simply include a username created by you.

With an email
  • Important:

All of the below options require that members sign in with a Microsoft or Google email.

    1. Join code:

Going to www.flip.com and entering a join code. For example, "a602dd7e."

    2. Link:

Clicking a link with a code at the end. For example, "https://flip.com/a602dd7e."
      • This link can lead to either a group or a topic.
        • Group links can be set as "Anyone can join" or "Only people who are approved."
        • Topics links will let members request to join the topic, unless they've already been approved.
      • If a topic is in a group where a member has been approved through email or Google Classroom, they can automatically join. If a group link is set as "Anyone can join," they'll be able to view all topics in the group, unless they're hidden or private.
    3. Google Classroom:

Clicking a link on Google Classroom or in a member's email.

    4. Guest password:

Including a guest password to join a topic.
      • Important: Guest passwords can only be used for topics. This lets you keep select topics within groups private.
Without an email

This option doesn't require that members sign in with a Microsoft or Google email. That also means that members won't have the ability to save videos to their profile or post later to a group or topic.

Once you create a group and invite a member with a username, you must remain with this option and can't change how members join your group.

  1. Username:

Members can enter a join code and include a specific username as given by you to access a group. Learn more about how to add members by username or QR code.

Important: After members sign in for the first time with a Microsoft or Google email, members can continue using Flip at my.flip.com

Step 2: Choose who can join with your link

Regardless if your members are invited to join with or without an email, you can still choose to set your group link as:

  • Option 1: Anyone can join
This means that even without receiving an invitation through Google Classroom, a username, guest password or added with an email or domain anyone will be able to join.
  • Option 2: Only people you approve
This means that only members invited through Google Classroom, a username, guest password, or added with an email or domain will be able to join.
    • Important: If you choose the "Anyone with the link can join" option, even if you invite members with a specific method, other members will be able to join your group immediately.

Step 3: Make changes after you create your group

How to change how members join your group

On web, you can change the method through which you invite members. On mobile, you can only change your link settings and blocked members.

Important: To have the option to limit members who can join your group, you must select "Only people you approve" in your group details under "Link." Learn more about who can join your group with the two available link options.

Web Browser Mobile Application
  1. Go to admin.flip.com.
  2. At the top left, click Groups Groups.png.
    • To add members to a new group: At the top right, click +Group
  3. Hover over the group where you want to add more members.
  4. At the top right of the group's image, click More More.png > Edit group Edit_pencil.png.
  5. Under "Who Can Join?" in the "Link" settings, select how members can join your group.
    • Anyone with the link: Any Flip user who finds the Join code or link can join the group, regardless of whether or not you invite them to the group or integrate your group with Google Classroom.
    • Only people you approve: This allows you to approve or deny any Flip user who tries to join your group.
  6. Select the join method for members to join your group.
  7. Click Save changes.

How to add members by email or domain

Important: If you select "Anyone with the link can join," adding members by email lets you send them an invitation directly to their inbox. This still means that anyone outside of your invitation will still be able to join your group.

  1. In the bottom, tap Groups Groups.png.
  2. Select the group you just created. Then, tap Members Members.png.
  3. Tap Invite Members > Email.
  4. In the text box, enter an email or domain.
    • You can add members to your group by their individual email (name@example.com) or by an organization domain (@example.com).
    • Any members you add directly are able to join the group automatically, regardless of your Join code or link setting.
  5. To add the email or domain, tap Add Add__Plus_in_circle_.png.
  6. After you add all emails or domains, in the top right, tap Done.
